Build the pieces you need.
Keep the rest optional.

Fabric is an open construction layer for computing. It keeps capabilities, implementations, and reusable behavior independent so projects can connect only what they need.

Start with one useful piece. Compose more when the project calls for it.

background

Possible relationships, not a required stack.

Start small

Keep boundaries clear

Compose when useful

Keep technical meaning separate from the machinery around it.

Software becomes harder to reuse when capability, implementation, and environment assumptions collapse into the same thing. Fabric preserves useful boundaries so parts can evolve independently without forcing the whole project to move together.

Independent. A capability is not the implementation that currently provides it.

Portable. A package can stay useful without knowing the full environment it may later join.

Define what is needed. Keep how it is provided replaceable.

Capabilities before implementations. A Resource names a technical capability without deciding which implementation must provide it.

hand with an apple watch

Replaceable machinery. An Adapter connects that capability to concrete machinery, so the implementation underneath can evolve without redefining the semantics above it.

Use Fabric at the scale the problem needs.
One useful piece can be enough. Larger structures stay possible when the project grows.

abstract background

One useful piece. A Resource, Adapter, Component, or reusable package can be valuable on its own.

A focused project. Embedded, edge, application, or appliance software can connect only the capabilities and behavior it actually needs.

A richer environment. Larger systems can connect many pieces, while frameworks keep their own vocabulary above Fabric. STEL is one example of how far that can scale.

Use the concepts that help. Stop where your project is complete.
Resource, Adapter, Component, and Composition are independent Fabric concepts — not a required ladder.

Fabric

Resource

Name the capability. A Resource names the semantics of a technical capability without deciding which implementation must provide it.

  • Compute
  • Storage
  • Messaging

Adapter

Connect it to real machinery. An Adapter connects capability semantics to a concrete implementation, service, runtime, device, host, or other external reality.

  • Runtime
  • Engine
  • Host

Component

Add reusable behavior. A Component adds reusable behavior and meaning using capabilities without owning the infrastructure choices underneath.

  • Behavior
  • Semantics
  • Dependencies

Composition

Connect pieces when useful. A Composition declares how selected pieces relate when a project needs them to form a larger whole.

  • Components
  • Resources
  • Bindings

Open where it helps.
Structured where it matters.

Explicit

Know what a piece means and what it needs.

Independent

Keep capability, implementation, and behavior separate where it matters.

Replaceable

Change machinery without redefining the semantics above it.

Composable

Connect pieces into larger structures when the project needs it.

The principles behind Fabric

A useful abstraction should remove an obligation, not merely add another layer. A capability should not become inseparable from the machinery that currently provides it.

Fabric

Boundary principle

Rich systems should be possible without making rich systems the minimum entry point. Composition should add power upward without turning that power into an obligation downward.
